How Often Should You Water Grass in UAE Summer?

By Al Qaswan Landscape ·

A green lawn in the UAE summer is possible, but only with the right watering routine. Water too little and the grass turns brown in days. Water too much and you waste money, invite fungus and weaken the roots. In this guide, Al Qaswan Landscape explains how often to water grass in the UAE summer, the best time of day, and the signs that your lawn needs more or less water.

How often should you water grass in UAE summer?

In the peak summer months (June to September), most lawns in the UAE need watering every day. In very hot, windy weather or on sandy soil, some lawns need two shorter cycles a day. In the cooler months the lawn needs much less water, so the timer should be reduced from around October onwards.

  • Summer (June to September): daily watering, sometimes split into two cycles.
  • Spring and autumn: every day or every second day, depending on heat.
  • Winter (December to February): two to three times a week is often enough.

Every garden is different. Grass type, soil, shade, sprinkler type and wind all change how much water a lawn needs, so use these as a starting point and adjust.

The best time of day to water your lawn

Water early in the morning, before sunrise if possible. The air is cooler and calmer, so less water is lost to evaporation and wind, and the grass dries during the day, which lowers the risk of fungus. If you need a second cycle, a short one in the late evening works well. Avoid watering in the midday sun, when a large share of the water simply evaporates.

Water deeply, not just often

Short, light sprinkles keep the roots near the surface, where they dry out fastest. Deeper watering encourages roots to grow down, which helps the lawn survive the heat. Check that the water is soaking into the soil and not running off onto paths.

Signs your lawn needs more water

  • Footprints stay visible on the grass for a long time.
  • The grass turns a dull blue-grey colour.
  • Brown patches appear, often near the edges or in sunny spots.
  • Blades curl or fold in the afternoon heat.

Signs you are overwatering

  • The soil stays soggy or puddles form.
  • Mushrooms, moss or fungus patches appear.
  • The grass is yellow even though it is wet.
  • Your water bill is rising with no improvement in the lawn.

Simple ways to keep grass green in the heat

  • Check sprinklers regularly for blocked or broken heads and dry spots.
  • Mow a little higher in summer, because longer grass shades its own roots.
  • Never cut more than one third of the blade at once.
  • Choose heat-tolerant grass such as Bermuda or Paspalum for new lawns.
  • Feed lightly and regularly instead of heavy fertiliser in peak heat.

Frequently asked questions

How many minutes should I water my lawn in Dubai summer?

It depends on the sprinkler type and soil. A good test is to water, then check that the top few centimetres of soil are moist. Adjust the timer until the lawn stays green without puddles.

Is it bad to water grass at night in the UAE?

Watering late at night leaves the grass wet for many hours, which can encourage fungus. Early morning is better. A short evening cycle is fine if the lawn needs extra water.

Does artificial turf need watering?

Artificial turf does not need water to grow, but rinsing it occasionally removes dust and cools the surface on very hot days.
